The Flight

The flight from Heathrow to Dubai was comfortable and uneventful. The premium economy seats were comfortable, food very tasty and plentiful, and the in flight entertainment was … entertaining and did it’s job.

The flight from Dubai to Hong Kong however was an example of where Emirates could do better. With no premium economy option on our flight and an uncomfortable seat on a 12-year-old plane, it didn’t help get the trip off to a good start. Made worse on final approach into Hong Kong by the flight attendants not performing a cabin check where they would have noticed an overhead bin left open by a lazy passenger from earlier. (They did close it, but only a few miles out from landing).

The Hong Kong Hotel

The Novotel Citygate offered a free shuttle bus from the airport (see hotel guide on right-hand side). First impressions were not amazing, as the front rotating doors were out of action (used a side door), the foyer art piece behind reception was caked in dust and service was very slow with only a couple of staff members to check in. After 30 minutes we were checked in but the note requesting bedding to not use feathers had been received though in fairness, they did change them very quickly and apologized.

Disney, Hong Kong

Disney MTR train

Our first full day in Hong Kong included a visit to Disney. After taking the MTR to the Disneyland transfer station, we boarded the special Disney trains (windows are shaped like Mickeys). A quick 5-minute journey later, and we arrived at Disney’s own station to make a short walk to the entrance plaza.

We headed straight for the Jungle River Cruise and after a short 20minute queue we boarded. Impressively the narration from the cast member was in 3 languages, Chinese, Cantonese and English allowing us to follow along.

After the cruise, we walked round to the Toy Story area to find a queue time of 40 minutes for the RC racer and decided it was not worth it. After downloading the Disney Hong Kong app we were then able to follow along with queue times for the other rides too.

Toy Story land was followed by the Lion King show. A 20-minute queue later, and we were sat on the round in a theatre with great views from pretty much every seat. The show was impressively in a mixture of English and possibly Cantonese, and we noticed Chinese subtitles on TVs located above us. The 3-year-old we had with us was transfixed for the show.

We followed the Lion King with lunch in the loosely themed Avengers area at the Starlight Diner. I got an Iron Man burger, that came with wedges. The food was tasty, but the queue to get it was long and the environment we ate it in was uncomfortable. The metal benches were suitable for their purpose, but there were birds flying around (trying to get the leftover food) and bird faeces everywhere.

Regrettably space mountain had been closed for some reason, so decided to take a ride on It’s A Small World.

This followed with a ride on Frozen, which has to be one of the best themed dark boat rides I have been on. Having never seen the film, the ride was still enjoyable, and the added drops inside had context.

The themed rollercoaster next door was equally entertaining too, with great theming and thrills and a shorter queue though a shorter ride.

Dinner was taken at the Main Street Corner Cafe. The food here was very tasty, albeit at a slightly higher price. The environment was much nicer with comfy seats and this time, no birds flying around.

We even managed to sneak a ride on the mine train rollercoaster just before the fireworks, which too had great theming and even greater thrills.

The end of night fireworks was a great watch but was very crowded. People had been sat on the floor trying to get the optimum position hours beforehand. When it finished. We waited for about 15 minutes after the fireworks ended before we started to leave after the main bulk of crowds had left. By the time we got to the station, the majority of people had gone and after a small queue to get through the ticket barriers we were straight on the change.
